ILCA National Championships and Pre-Nationals Coaching Clinic

Pre-Nationals Coaching Clinic

Fremantle Sailing Club hosted the coaching clinic between 19th – 22nd Dec 2025 with coaches Tristan Brown (WAIS), Chris Charlwood & Oliver Pabbruwe supporting the 20 sailors we had participate.

Across the four days we conducted a combination of training exercises and coaches regatta racing, mostly completed in strong SW Seabreezes. Whilst the focus of this clinic was preparing our sailors for the National Championships, several other non-travelling ILCA WA members took up the opportunity to further hone their skills.

Other highlights were a Hobart Venue familiarisation theory session to understand the River Derwent’s tendencies, Q&A session with Irish & Dutch Olympic ILCA 7 sailors, as well having AST sailors Elyse Ainsworth & Zoe Thomson present our sailors with their Team Uniforms for Hobart.

ILCA Australian Championships 2026

Following various fundraising efforts, ILCA WA managed to have two coaches in attendance ( Chris Charlwood – ILCA 6 & 7 and Oliver Pabbruwe – ILCA 4). Tristan Brown was there coaching for Australian Sailing / WAIS with their ILCA 7 Futures Program.

The 2026 Oceania & Australian Open & Youth Championships were held at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.

Racing started on Saturday 3rd January and continued through until Thursday 8th January for a total of 12 races in a wide range of conditions.

The ILCA 4 (77 entries) and the ILCA 6 (74 entries) were both sailed in split fleets, whilst the ILCA 7s (40 entries) sailed as a single fleet.

It was particularly pleasing to see WA athletes win all three categories in the ILCA 4, ILCA 6 & ILCA 7!

Additionally, Jasper Stay’s strong results have also qualified him as the sole ILCA 6 Male representative for the World Sailing Youth Championships to be contested in Portugal in December 2026.

The “Battens Trophy” is awarded to the best performing state across all classes at the ILCA Nationals.

As a consequence of our strong results, I am pleased to report WA has retained the trophy!
